16 November 2021 – Cutabove Academy Assessment Level 5 Diploma Special FX makeup & prosthetic making
Today, I got assessed on the practical skill of face casting, which is the first step to creating the mold for our prosthetic we will use for our final character assessment.
We were taught the process, using Alginate and plaster bandages. With the help of an assistance, who made sure that the nasal passage was clear at all times, I managed to work quickly and achieve a really awesome result. The next step was completed by poring a Plaster of Paris mold from the cast and repeating the process to finally run the face mold in Hydrocal.
I understand this is quite an outdated way in the industry these days and I look forward to learning different methods going forward to build on my skills.
Things I have learnt and would do differently next time: The angles on the clay build up on the plaster of paris mold were a little bit wide. It is super important to have as tight an angle to the face as possible, when running the final version and I ended up with quite a visible line between the face and the build up, which took quite a lot of nearly impossible sanding on the stone. I would also build up more hydrocal around the handle. After running several prosthetics, I had to fix the handle that was breaking loose from using the C clamps.
